An interdisciplinary centre for law and its interaction with new technologies. The Center for Law and Tech brings together law-and-technology research at the University of St.Gallen. We study how new technologies are reshaping law, markets and society — and how law shapes which technologies are built, how they are used, and who carries the risk.
The HSG hub for law and technology. We combine legal expertise across private, public, criminal, competition and international law, and draw on computer science and economics where understanding the technology requires it. Our aim is to develop regulatory approaches that enable innovation while safeguarding fundamental rights and the public interest.
Research that arrives in time. We aim for research that is relevant beyond the academic debate: to Swiss, EU and international policymaking, to public debate about new technologies, to legal practice, and to the companies developing and deploying these technologies. To that end we work with regulators, practitioners and industry.
Knowledge that works in practice. Through continuing education and joint practice projects, we make insights on law and technology directly usable in practice. We provide expertise and practical skills to help assess technological change and actively shape it. Together with authorities, courts and companies, we develop and test solutions for concrete challenges. The lessons learned feed back into our research and teaching.
